The Buddha Garden

Garden Eden

The Garden of Joy

Nestled in the heart of Portugal’s wine region, near the town of Bombarral, the Buddha Eden Garden is a breathtaking oasis of peace and serenity. Spanning over 35 hectares, it is considered the largest oriental garden in Europe, offering visitors a unique blend of nature, art, and spirituality.

One place for Spirituality

A lot to see

The garden was created by Portuguese businessman José Berardo in response to the destruction of the Bamiyan Buddhas in Afghanistan in 2001. Inspired by Buddhist philosophy and Asian aesthetics, he envisioned a space dedicated to peace, tolerance, and cultural appreciation. Today, the garden is home to an impressive collection of sculptures, pagodas, lakes, and exotic plants, making it a must-visit destination for travelers exploring Portugal.

One of the most striking features of Buddha Eden is its vast array of Buddha statues, including giant stone Buddhas, terracotta warrior replicas, and golden statues reflecting in the tranquil waters of the garden’s ponds. Walking through the paths, visitors encounter peaceful koi ponds, Japanese-style bridges, and hidden corners where one can sit and meditate amidst nature.

Beyond its Buddhist influence, the garden also showcases African art, with a section dedicated to contemporary sculptures from the continent. This fusion of cultures and artistic styles adds to the garden’s uniqueness, making it not only a spiritual retreat but also an open-air museum.

Located just half an hour’s drive away from us, Buddha Eden Garden is a perfect day-trip destination for those looking to escape and immerse themselves in a world of tranquility and beauty. Whether you’re a lover of art, nature, or spirituality, this enchanting garden is sure to leave a lasting impression.
